Terrence Ngobeni

I am the Chairperson of Ikemeleng Environmental Development and Justice, a community-based organisation advancing environmental justice and human rights in mining-affected areas of South Africa. My work centres on holding corporations accountable for the externalised costs of mining, including environmental degradation, water contamination, and impacts on public health. I am a trained community monitor, having completed a four-year programme at the Community Monitoring School, and I specialise in information analysis, policy research, and investigative writing. Since 2019, I have written for the Benchmarks Foundation on critical issues affecting our communities, including gender-based violence against children and labour recruitment abuses. I also have formal training in permaculture and agriculture, which informs my approach to ecological restoration and community resilience. My mission is to build informed, organised communities that can meaningfully participate in decisions about land, water, and mining development.
